Same same… but different. I’ll be strolling through the supermarket here and see a familiar packet only to realise… it’s not the same… and yet it is the same. I know companies often have to change the names of products from country to country, so perhaps this is the case with many of the following that I’ve found.
Weet-a-bix: my favourite classic Australian cereal does exist here. But it’s called Weet-a-bix instead of Weet-Bix and it has rounded corners.
Ovomaltine: sounds a bit like someone tried to say Ovaltine with a whole lot of Ovaltine in their mouth!
Cif: Nope, not Jif… Cif!
Fonzies: Ok these are technically found in Italy, but they deserve a place here, even if just for the cool name.
WC Ente: It’s not so much a change of brand, but the fact that the Aussie version is a straight translation: Toilet Duck
Wick: Nup… not Vicks VapoRub. It’s Wick VapoRub. And my English-speaking mouth just can’t quite get the German to work here.
Kesselchips: These aren’t even the same as Kettle chips – they’ve simply translated the name into German!
Hofer: And where do I buy many of my favourite items of produce. That’s right… Hofer. Not Aldi. Hofer. Though it is Aldi in Germany. So go figure.
