There’s something about this time of year, and despite our house having flywire over almost every window (which is not necessarily common here), the mosquitos love to sneak in, and prepare for their late-night dance party.
I’ll be safely tucked into bed, about to doze off, and there’s that tell-tale, maddening, high-pitched whining right next to my ear. And I can be extremely close to sleep, but that noise will yank me out, have my heart racing and me slapping myself for dear life, in a fraction of a second. And of course it is all for nothing, because that damn mosquito is gone.
Having a kid now, I notice them more. Because although they don’t seem to wake him up in the night, it doesn’t mean they don’t ravage him. So, if I see those tell-tale red bumps…
It’s time to go mosquito hunting.
They like to lurk behind curtains, and for whatever reason, there seems to be certain places in particular rooms they gravitate to. At this time of year, we’ll do a mosquito check before putting Sam to bed (and yeah, it’s absolutely a game), and if I’m smart, I do one in my room too. And if I’m not smart, then bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzffs.
Because when you’ve got a kid, anything else that wakes you up just adds fuel to the fire.
Luckily, I’ve worked out where they land in my room. So, if I don’t panic and slap the crap out of myself, scaring them further afield, it can be a relatively quick destruction. I slowly sit up, turn on the light or shine the phone, turn to the wall and BAM, with my fly swot.
Cause recently I’ve taken to sleeping with one next to my bed.
Apparently, they are attracted to the carbon dioxide we breathe out, which explains why they come up close and personal when we are almost asleep.
But soon it will get cold, and then they should thankfully disappear for a bit. Because there’s got to be some advantage about these cold winter temperatures!
