Stuck in the middle of a long, cold winter of lockdown (one of the few full winter’s I’ve endured in Austria since arriving), one of my friends (a big thank you goes out to Larry) made a plan to get some of my other Aussie mates together for an online event to help brighten it a little. She’d told me that she was organising something but I didn’t find out it was cocktail making until a few days before.
I was super excited for the day. I knew what we were making but I didn’t know who was going to turn up and I certainly didn’t know how I was going to drink 5 cocktails in an hour! To manage the disruptive ten hour time zone change, I would be undertaking this challenge at 12 noon, and the Aussies would have to wait until 10pm to start their mixing.
Our lovely host, Penny, and mixologist, James, from Drool kicked off the afternoon/evening entertainment. And before long we were shaking, mixing and pouring to our hearts’ content. I would highly recommend Drool if you’re looking for a similar experience, be it virtual or in-person. They were super enthusiastic and super knowledgeable, answering all of our cocktail-related questions and guiding us through making each one. We created a Cosmopolitan, a Gimlet, a Gin Gizz, a Moscow Mule and a Margarita. My favourite was definitely the Gimlet, and hubby was happy to help me out with consumption so I didn’t end up on the floor at the end of the session, which thankfully bled out to an hour and a half giving us more time to enjoy ourselves and the drinks.
It was such an awesome day for me. Because we were a small group, we could all have our videos and sound on and talk freely and there were plenty of laughs. I almost felt like I’d spent the day with my good friends in Oz. And in these times, when that’s all there is, it feels pretty damn good. Cheers!
What a great idea Larry. Everyone looks like they enjoyed it.
Yes they did! Some not so much the next day…
