I’ve already summed up my top ten tips for making a long-haul flight half bearable. But here’s some more tips to encourage the time to fly… just like you are.
Mix up what you do: The key to feeling like time is going faster is not to do one thing for too long… except for sleeping… do that as much as you can.
Don’t start with a movie: It’s tempting to dive straight into the theatre when you get on the aeroplane. But it’s a mistake, because of the announcement interruptions. Instead, think about one of the following options at least until you’ve taken off and the plane has levelled out:
- Read: Come pre-prepared with a good book. Or load your kindle up with multiple options to keep you busy.
- Try a game on your phone: Sure, they’re not the most exciting thing in the world, but they’re quick, easy, accessible, and they sure waste time.
- Watch something on a tablet: Maybe you hate the selection of in-flight movies, or maybe you really want to watch something while the announcements are on. Pre-load some movies or a good series and enjoy your time.
Take a walk: Just cause you can. Stretch those legs. Find a bit of space and do some basic exercises. It will make you feel better.
Enjoy the view: Don’t forget to peek out the window now and again. Sometimes you can see snow-capped mountains. Sometimes the blinking lights of distant cities far below. Check out the information channel to find out where you are and enjoy.
Don’t call for flight attendants: If you need something… get up… go and ask for a drink or a snack instead of having it brought to you. It stretches your legs, gives you something to do, and might just keep you in favour with the flight attendants.
Space out if you can’t sleep: If you can sleep on a plane, then by all means, do that as much as possible. But you’re like me and have trouble, space out instead. That could mean watching an old classic until your eyes won’t stay open any longer, or listening to music, with no expectation of going to sleep. It’s a trick of the insomniac… even if you don’t feel like you haven’t, you will at least grab some winks here and there.
And finally… be in business class: I know… it’s not something everyone can do. But if you can, the flight feels a lot shorter.
