Today’s post will be dedicated to one of the creepiest things I have come across in Austria so far: the disturbing Osterlamm (Easter Lamb). It’s not for the faint hearted, so read on at your own risk. Continue reading

Austrian food – what’s amazing
Following on from last week’s post about the foods I’m missing from Oz, it wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t also share a little about some of the amazing foods in Austria that can’t readily be found in Oz.
So here’s just a selection… my top 5… oh I mean 6 🙂 Continue reading
Austrian food – what’s missing
Food plays a very important role in my life. Not only do I need it to stay alive, but I love to eat it, I love to cook it and I love to read menus! After a few months living in Austria (remember, small town) I found that most things I knew existed in some way, shape or form… it was just a matter of translating and hunting.

But more than a year in… there are still some things missing. I’m not talking about the classic Cadbury chocolate, Tim Tams or Vegemite, I’m talking things you wouldn’t initially think about. Here’s my top five:
Christmas cookies – I couldn’t possibly eat anymore… ok just one then
Austrians don’t really do dessert on Christmas Day, but that doesn’t mean they miss out.

For the entire month of December (and as long as they last after) Austrians bake truckloads Christmas cookies. They are everywhere – in shops, at work… and especially in people’s homes. Be prepared to be offered massive platefuls wherever you go. Continue reading
Short Trips – St Daniele – Wine & prosciutto heaven

In June we went to Italy for the day (yes, I know, but that’s not that best bit) for a prosciutto festival (see, that’s the best bit).
St Daniele is famous for its amazing prosciutto and every year they hold a festival – it’s a couple of hours drive for us… but it was well worth it.
Foraging – it’s kind of like living inside a giant banquet
I grew up with a large backyard in suburban Melbourne and a Dad with a passion for fruit and vegies. As a youngster, it was quite common for me to go and collect my dinner straight from the garden, or grab a piece of fruit from the tree on the way to school. Then there was the time I started selling my parents vegetables back to them at a price… but that’s a completely different story.

Zotters – Austria’s very own Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
There is a magical land of chocolate in Austria… only an hour and half away. Even though I’m not a huge fan of chocolate, a friend was visiting us from London and she absolutely insisted we go. Chocoholics beware – read on at your own risk!

Ostern/Easter – Chocolate, ham and sweet bread
Sadly, I missed Easter in Austria this year. I was enjoying some much needed sun and friend catch-ups in Australia. Like Christmas, it seems that Easter is taken a lot more seriously over here. Once again, completely different if you’re religious. So despite my not having actually been here, here are my impressions of it.

Raclette – the meal that keeps on giving
This is definitely one of my top meal discoveries from Austria. Traditionally a Swiss dish, Raclette is enjoyed by many countries around Europe and is what I would call an interactive meal.
